Dr. Carl R. Noback
Dr. Carl R. Noback is our Medical Director. He has over 30 years of Pain Management experience and is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with a lifetime certificate. A recognized expert in Pain Management, he has been an early adopter of many interventional techniques. He performed radiofrequency procedures, intrathecal narcotic infusions, and implants as far back as the 1970’s. Intradiscal procedures were added in the early 1980’s, and endoscopic procedures in the spine shortly thereafter. As a pioneer of interventional pain management, he has numerous presentations, and publications. His novel approaches to difficult problems has helped many when other treatment plans have not been completely successful. Dr. Noback brings to IPS a background and perspective on Pain Management Services that is second to none, particularly with respect to Pain practice management, provision of anesthesia for Interventional Pain procedures, as well as the techniques themselves.
Dr. Noback is a physician, teacher, author, researcher and forensic specialist. Dr. Noback is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading anesthesiologists, and is considered an authority in this highly specialized area of medicine.
In addition to the Pain portion of his practice, Dr. Noback was selected as one of the four original physicians for ABC’s show, “Extreme Makeover” (2002-2005), providing anesthesiology services for the renowned Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Garth Fisher. He has also appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and has been seen or referenced on CNN, Larry King Live, MSNBC, and featured in InTouch Weekly. The DVD, “The Naked Truth About Anesthesia” (see “Our Library”) was written by and featured him. This media presentation is used to educate the public, patients, and students about the realities of Anesthesia.
Dr. Noback attended Yale University where he was recognized as a Yale National Scholar. He received the distinguished honor of becoming a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, in 1980 and became a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, practicing with a subspecialty in Pain Management.
His academic appointments have included the Mayo Clinic, Emory University in Atlanta, the University of Nevada, and the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Noback continues to teach and train other physicians via training and seminars, lectures and books. He’s been published in highly respected medical journals and periodicals worldwide. A recent publication is featured in the authoritative textbook edited by Wall and Melzack, “The Handbook of Pain Management”.
Dr. Noback has extensive experience in clinical research, where his primary interests include extended duration outpatient surgery, disc repair and spinal surgery, and information technology as applied to anesthesiology.
Dr. Noback was a managing partner of “Forensic Associates”, a firm providing litigation support to attorneys for accident and injury reconstruction. In his work as a medical forensic consultant, he has been recognized as an expert, with testimony in multiple jurisdictions and states. While working in the Forensic Medicine arena, Dr. Noback has been qualified as an expert in the fields of Anesthesiology, Pain Management, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Neurology.
In addition to his work in Pain Management, Anesthesiology, and Forensics, Dr. Noback helped develop an early Pain Procedure specific electronic medical record, integrating patient data, procedure notes, and electronic billing. Integrating clinical data into the Medical Record was a project at Harbor-UCA with the “Point of Care Project” (see “Our Library”).
